With electricity prices climbing and sustainability becoming a national priority, South Africans are paying closer attention to how efficiently their air conditioners perform. and how much energy i.
Whether you’re cooling your coastal home in Durban or your office in Johannesburg, understanding energy ratings can make a big difference – to your comfort, your electricity bill, and the planet.
The Basics: EER, SEER & CSPF
When comparing air conditioners, you’ll see three main efficiency ratings:
- EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) – measures efficiency at one fixed test condition.
- SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) – measures efficiency across an entire cooling season.
- CSPF (Cooling Seasonal Performance Factor) – the most advanced, globally recognised standard for seasonal performance.
In South Africa, EER is still the official standard, but SEER and CSPF give a much clearer picture of real-world performance.
EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio)
EER measures performance at 100% capacity and 35°C outdoor temperature.
- Good for: meeting current South African energy label requirements
- Limitation: doesn’t reflect real-life operation or inverter performance
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio)
SEER looks at how efficiently your system runs throughout the year – from mild spring days to the hottest summer afternoons. It also considers part-load performance and standby power use.
- Good for: understanding real-life energy savings
- Daikin pro tip: We include SEER ratings on many models to give you a complete performance picture.
CSPF (Cooling Seasonal Performance Factor)
CSPF is the international standard that will soon guide South Africa’s new energy labelling system. Like SEER, it measures efficiency over a full cooling season — but with different testing criteria.
- Good for: the most accurate global comparison
- Daikin pro tip: CSPF is expected to become South Africa’s new benchmark by 2026.
South Africa’s transition from EER to CSPF will bring clearer energy labels, better transparency, and smarter choices for consumers. Daikin is ready – and our systems are already tested against the world’s most advanced efficiency standards.
The South African Context
Currently, South Africa still uses EER for compliance and energy labels. But regulators are preparing to adopt CSPF, aligning the country with international standards.
A UNIDO study for the Department of Energy estimated that this shift could save South Africa over 800,000 MWh of energy by 2037 – a major win for sustainability and affordability.
At Daikin South Africa, transparency matters.
That’s why we publish both EER and SEER ratings on many of our air conditioners, so you can see how your system performs in both test conditions and real-world use.
Our inverter technology automatically adjusts compressor speed to meet demand, improving efficiency and comfort while reducing energy consumption – benefits that SEER and CSPF capture accurately.
Choosing the Right Air Conditioner
When buying a new air conditioner, always ask for the SEER or CSPF rating. These modern metrics give you a true sense of how much energy (and money) you’ll save over time.
- Look for systems with a SEER or a CSPF above 6.0
- Choose inverter-driven models for superior performance
- Ask your installer for official Daikin efficiency ratings
With Daikin, you’re choosing more than comfort – you’re choosing efficiency, reliability, and a sustainable future.
Choose Smarter. Cool Better. Save More.
